SUCCESS STORIES

Pushpa Balraj Koli who is 15 years old is an orphan child and was referred to our shelter in 2001 by an organization named Sneha. Her father passed away in an accident and her mother expired as a result of acute Tuberculosis. As the eldest child in the family Pusha shouldered the responsibility of taking care of her mother as well as attending to the household chores. She has two younger sisters and one brother of which one sister is mentally retarded. Pushpa was at her mother’s bedside till her death in 2001. And then she became an orphan and had no one to take care of them. It was then that “The Sharanam Shelter for girls” acted as a home for these girls. Pushpa was then 10yrs old and knew nothing apart from housework. After some basic education at the center she was admitted to the third standard in the Municipal school.

When Pushpa joined the center she appeared to be healthy but after a year her health started deteriorating. she became very weak and had no strength at all. For almost a year she was given health tonics for gaining strength, but there was no improvement. In March 2003 the Doctor advised for a monte test to be done. Very surprisingly the report was normal. This worried the doctors, as medicines too did not react on her. In April 2003 the Doctor once again advised for X-ray, urine and Monte test to be done. This report showed that Pushpa was suffering from acute Tuberculosis just like her mother. Treatment for Pushpa began immediately. She was given strong medicines, health tonics and injections daily. Pushpa had reached a stage where she could not stand or walk. Along with the medicines and daily meal she was given additional diet comprising of egg, milk and fruits. Her health was monitored every three months and each month Pushpa showed signs of improvement. This was good news for all at the center. By April 2004 Pushpa recovered completely and the doctors stopped her medicines.

Pushpa is now studying in the 8th standard and goes to the private school. She is very active, jovial, takes part in all activities and is a good dancer too. She is mature and responsible and takes care of the younger kids at the center too and her ambition is to be a teacher.
